OUR HISTORY:
In the beginning...
Carl and Agnes Boyd had a vision.
They saw a need to provide services to a special group of adults.
In 1971, they saw their dream become a reality as they opened the doors of Boyd's Kinsman Home- the first home of its kind.
Carl and Agnes were concerned about the future of their son, Dale, once they were deceased. They knew other families in Trumbull County, also with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who shared the same concerns. They saw a need for a loving, nurturing environment for these special people to call home. The doors opened in September of 1971with 15 residents by month's end. Mr. & Mrs. Boyd ("Mom & Pop" as they were always called) served as house parents and resided in their apartment on the second floor. The first floor capacity of 30 was reached rapidly with more people on the waiting list. The Boyds kept their apartment but converted the rest of the upstairs to add more living space and bedrooms for an additional 15 residents in 1975. Our current capacity is 40 residents, a large number of people, but with a very close-knit family atmosphere. Our residents are very proud to say that this is their "home" - even if they still have family and another home elsewhere. They consider everyone at Boyd's, residents and staff, part of their extended family; our staff view our residents the same.
All of our residents are employed in a sheltered workshop or are part of our Seniors Program. In 1984, Agnes had a new vision, to open a workshop on our grounds. Again, Agnes worked until her dream was a reality when she opened Hartford Hill Company. It quickly became a flourishing business. Now called Pitmark Services, Inc., our residents take great pride in their workshop, the types of jobs they are able to perform, and that they are able to work competitively with the outside workforce. Within the "sheltered" conditions, jobs are adapted, residents are able to work at their own pace and ability, feel accepted, praised, and motivated, which boosts their self-esteem and work productivity to help them thrive! A few residents are in our dynamic Seniors Program. They are very active and busy, enjoying creative programming, activities, community involvement, and daily outings!
Our group has always been a very active one. Before Carl Boyd died in 1981, he arranged for the purchase of a new 48-passenger charter bus. With Agnes Boyd as "chauffeur" the group ventured on many outings. We now use three 15-passenger vans and 2 cars for traveling and appointments. Our residents can be found often at community events, church events, concerts, the mall, restaurants, movies, parades, various sporting events, and recreational activities such as bowling, putt-putt, and swimming- just to name a few places! Each summer everyone loads up and goes away for a weekend trip to take in a play, visit museums, or sight-see a number of attractions. The residents are also treated to many activities, crafts, games, parties, and events at our home. Community groups such as the Boy Scouts, Library Association, area churches and civic organizations have also been faithful in providing us with a good time over the years.
Boyd's Kinsman Home is a non-profit organization overseen by a Board of Trustees and an Administrative Team. Agnes resided in her apartment at Boyd's and was affectionately called "Mom" by all until she passed in 2008, at age 91. There are over 40 employees who help make this a "home" and strive to maintain the home-like atmosphere. Many dedicated employees have worked here over 20 years, but even the newest employee or resident is quickly welcomed into our special "family".
Even though there are a great number of people living under one roof, there is a comradery and closeness among the residents; they feel like brothers and sisters to one another. Our employees know they are not coming to "work" but rather they are entering the HOME of the people whom they serve. Believing that we are guests in the residents' home helps keep our purpose in perspective!
