How many beds at Boyd's Home, the male/female ratio and the age range?
Boyd's Home is a two-story dwelling housing 40 residents with bedrooms on both floors. Both male and female residents live at Boyd's. Residents enjoy living with one roommate- half our rooms are for females and half are for males. Several common areas can be used on either floor despite which floor their bedroom is on. We have no private rooms. Currently the ages range from 20's to 80's.

What makes Boyd's Home unique?
This facility was the first of its kind in Ohio. From its inception, the word HOME was an integral part of the facility concept. Each of the residents considers Boyd's their home even though they might have a family and a dwelling place elsewhere. The staff is instructed to enter this building just as if they were entering the resident's private home. They are to interact with the residents in a kind and caring way while respecting their dignity and their property. Our staff turn-over rate is minuscule. The majority of our employees have been here at least 10 years with a large number having 20-30+ years of dedication. The residents are as close to each other as siblings and also feel a strong connection to the staff as their extended family.

Is there respite care available?
We did offer this service in the past but currently we do not provide respite care. Should we have the open beds in the future, we may consider once again providing this service.

What is the admission process?
Contact Boyd's Home at             330-876-5581       to arrange for a tour of the facility to see if this is a suitable placement. Interested parties are asked to leave some basic information about their family member along with a contact name and phone number. When a vacancy occurs, the family will be contacted for trial visits. An actual application is not completed until placement appears to be eminent.

How is placement financed?
Boyd's Home receives Medicaid funding for those residents who qualify monetarily. Private payment is made for those who have funds which exceed the Medicaid requirements until such funds are depleted and Medicaid can take affect. Social Security, SSI and workshop earnings also play a part in the coverage of room and board. The business office can answer any questions in regard to finances.

What kinds of safety measures does the facility have?
We maintain the state mandated staff ratio of 1:8 during waking hours and 1:15 during sleeping hours. The building is equipped with a fire alarm system and a sprinkler system. Routine fire drills and inspection of the equipment are strictly enforced. Staff is on the premises at all times and knows the whereabouts of the residents. Within this structure the residents are free to use the property grounds for leisure time, sports or other outdoor recreation. We have no gates or fences.

How are dental and medical needs addressed?
The facility medical director makes monthly visits to the home. He also maintains public office hours where the residents can visit him as needed. Emergency room services are located next door to his office. Residents are taken semi-annually for dental visits and any other check-ups as warranted. Hospitals and specialists are located within 30 minutes of Boyd's Home. The facility owns two cars and three vans which are used for transporting the residents to any medical appointment.

Are there trial visits prior to making the final commitment?
Before any new resident is accepted for placement, at least one, but usually two trial visits occur. One takes place over the weekend when the residents enjoy numerous fun activities and down time. The other takes place for 3-4 days during the week so the resident can experience the sheltered workshop and the work day routine. A final decision for placement is weighed after reviewing the outcome of these visits.

What are the visitation and vacation policies?
Family and friends are welcome to visit at any reasonable hour of the day or evening. If the resident leaves the facility they are "signed out" by the person who will be responsible for taking them. We encourage our residents to continue to partake in family events, outings, holidays and vacations. Each resident is allowed 30 days of leave time per year; however, additional days can be requested from ODH, if needed, by the administrator.

What about guardianship?
Boyd's Home never takes guardianship of any of its residents. We always encourage parents and guardians to take an active role in the care of their family member. They are welcome to pursue guardianship if so desired.

Where are the residents employed?
On the property grounds we have the Pitmark Services workshop. Other than the residents who qualify for our Seniors Program, the remaining residents work here. Their jobs include extrusion, stamping, sorting and bagging as well as various contracts that change frequently. Our folks take extreme pride in their work.

What is the Seniors Program?
Those residents who are no longer able to tolerate a full day of work belong to this program. We have very caring and creative instructors who provide crafts, music, exercise, games, outings, and entertainment for these folks. Three days a week they participate with the local Senior Citizens at their nutrition and activity site. Our senior folk are loved and nurtured by the seniors of the community.
